How to calculate Instagram engagement rate
Instagram engagement rate is the share of an account’s followers who interact with its posts. Engagement counts comments too, not just likes: add up the likes and comments on a post (or an average post), divide by the follower count, and multiply by 100.
So an account with 12,000 followers averaging 480 likes and 32 comments has an engagement rate of (480 + 32) ÷ 12,000 × 100 = 4.27%. Using an average across several recent posts is steadier than judging by a single viral or flat one.
What’s a good Instagram engagement rate?
Instagram’s blended average is now under 1% (about 0.45% in 2026) and drifting down, but that figure is dragged low by big accounts. Smaller accounts commonly see 1 to 6% on Reels, so above 3% is strong and above 6% is excellent for most creators. Read the bands below against accounts your size.
If reach is the constraint, short-form video is the lever. Reels get pushed to non-followers the way TikTok’s For You page does, and a strong hook in the first seconds is what earns the interaction.

Instagram engagement rate questions
Likes plus comments divided by followers, times 100. That is the standard influencer-marketing measure and the one 2026 benchmarks report. Some variations divide by reach instead of followers, or add saves and shares.
Followers is the standard for comparing accounts and vetting creators. Reach gives a truer read of how a single post performed against the people who actually saw it, but public reach numbers are rarely available.
Small accounts routinely beat large ones. Rates of 3 to 6% are common on Reels under a few thousand followers because the audience is closer. Compare against accounts your size rather than to mega-creators.
